About Portsmouth Country Club

Portsmouth Country Club was founded in 1901 by a group of local golf enthusiasts looking to create a course of their own. They purchased farmland and enlisted renowned course architect Alex Findlay to design a nine-hole layout—completed in just five weeks. By 1933, the course expanded to 18 holes, solidifying its place in the region’s golf scene. In the 1950s, the U.S. government acquired the original property through eminent domain to build a bomber base, now Pease Golf Course. The club relocated, purchasing its current site for $40,000 and commissioning legendary architect Robert Trent Jones to design a brand-new 18-hole course. Completed in 1956, it officially opened for play in July 1957. The original clubhouse stood for over 40 years before being replaced in 1998 with the modern facility members enjoy today.
